AZO. Sequeira Arquitectos Associados renovated an old dovecote in the backyard of a client’s home in Soutelo, Portugal. For its new function the architects proposed a communal family space that would host a play house for the children and a balneary to serve the pool on the ground floor.

Inspired by magic, fantasy, childhood dreams and memories, AZO Arquitectos went for a simple space defined by “emotional design”. They decided to transform the old dovecote in a minimal concrete tree house that could represent these memories and fantasies in a peaceful way.
The main volume resembles a tree house in its ‘levitating’ aspect, together with a balanced layout. The interior was absent of superfluous elements and it was gradually decorated by the children’s works and toys. The triangular window that once let the doves fly in, were kept as an element of the original architecture.
