The Mayor and the Architect: six projects for a changing Italy
The new auditorium designed by Renzo Piano in Parma; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome by the French architect Odile Decq; the Museo del Mare by Guillermo Vazquez Consuegra and the Parodi Bridge by Ben van Berkel in Genoa. And again, the restoration of the historic buildings on the island of Ortigia at Siracusa, by Vincenzo Latina; the restoration of the ex-wine warehouse by Boris Podrecca in Trieste; and the renovation of the railway station at Sondrio by Angelo Bugatti.
These six projects by six architects for six cities, and the six mayors who made it possible to realise them, are the winners of the second edition of the competition “The Prince and the Architect” (where the patron-prince stands for today’s mayor), promoted by the Milan and Bologna city councils.
From the initiative emerges an encouraging photograph of an Italy in action and, perhaps, on the right road. Where high quality public clients have turned to architects of international repute to redesign and revitalise the faces of their cities. The prize-winning ceremony will take place on February 20th in Milan, during the “Progetto Città” fair (19-22 February).
