Alsop chosen for Liverpool’s “Fourth Grace”

Beating Edward Cullinan Architects, Foster and Partners and Richard Rogers Partnership in the final, the winning design for the building in one of the major coastal cities of the world has been announced.

The building shaped like a mad whirlwind designed by Will Alsop will form Liverpool’s “Fourth Grace”, unanimously chosen last Friday by the jury of Liverpool Vision, the organisation responsible for the regeneration of the city. It will sit alongside the Cunard, Liver and Port of Liverpool buildings, described by Nikolaus Pevsber as representing “the great Edwardian imperial optimism”.

The building – known as “the Cloud” – will cost around 225 million pounds and should be completed by 2007, just in time to celebrate Liverpool’s turn as European city of culture. It will be a mixed use building with offices, a 107 room hotel and 4650 square metres of services, including a bar, restaurant and viewing gallery. By way of emphasising its historical and cultural links with the city it will be decorated with hieroglyphs illustrating the 800 year history of Liverpool.
