Ponti’s Pirelli tower: to be restored by mid 2004
Work will begin between January and February of next year to restore the Pirelli tower, headquarters of the Regione Lombardia, designed by Gio Ponti in the fifties and damaged 18 April. The restoration of the building, considered a work of art, is to be carried out according to specific guidelines, regarding both the inside and outside in order to be in keeping with the original. In order to remain faithful to Ponti’s intentions a committee has recovered the original drawings and material studies.
An in depth study will also be carried out regarding the interiors which over the years have been modified with additions necessary for the organisation of the offices. The restoration will also take account of the lighting effects which Ponti created through a careful study of materials and furnishing.
The work should take about 12-15 months to complete. The president of the Regione, Formigoni has also launched the idea to create inside the Pirelli tower itself a museum dedicated to Gio Ponti and his work.
