With economy of means in mind and strengthened by a continual search for new uses for existing materials (mostly cardboard), the architecture of the Japanese designer – born in Tokyo in 1957 – is distinguished by its extreme lightness and immediate sense of comfort. But at the same time, are conceived to respond and resolve difficult situations, such as natural disasters and poverty, with total respect for the environment.
Such is the case of “Paper Log House” made from tubes of cardboard and used for temporary shelter following the earthquakes which shook the cities of Kobe, in Japan in 1995 and Ankara in Turkey in 1999. Or again the “Case Study Houses” design ideas on the theme of the covering and partitions inside a dwelling. To complete the exhibition, the documentary “Shigeru Ban architecte de l’urgence” and furniture designed for Cappellini.
