Known as Pujiang New town, a new city for 80.000 people is to be built south of Shanghai, on the Huang-pu river over the next five years. The first of nine projects for as many urban areas in China - each inspired by a Western model – has been designed by Milan practice Gregotti Associati, winners of an international competition.
The urban design of Pujiang follows that of Venice, respecting the orthogonal grid of canals and walls and including parks, shopping and sports centres, major roads, piazzas and important buildings. The intention is to offer a kind of laboratory for the meeting of different cultures.
