Glo for art: from public space to museum collections

Falena, an artwork by Nico Vascellari that was created as part of the gloTM for art project, joins the collections of two important Italian cultural institutions dedicated to contemporary culture, MAXXI in Rome and the Milan Triennale.

Involving a wide audience and allowing the viewer to rediscover artistic experiences in a direct way, which the audience will be able to interpret in their own way, promoting the work of contemporary artists in Italy and democratising the artistic experience: these are the pillars of the gloTM for art project, which gloTM has promoted in recent years, appointing Cristiano Seganfreddo, publisher of Flash Art, as artistic director.

It was in this context that Falena was created, a work by Nico Vascellari presented in September 2022, on the occasion of the initiative "Il Mare a Milano" (The Sea in Milan) on the Darsena waterfront. Today, thanks to the artist's donation, Falena becomes part of the collections of two of Italy's most important cultural institutions dedicated to contemporary art, MAXXI in Rome and the Triennale in Milan, thus creating an artistic axis linking the two cities.

Falena is a monumental installation composed of gold-plated scythes that, mounted radially on four superimposed levels, create a large circular shape 2.5 metres in diameter that evokes the Sun and its rays. The work encompasses various symbologies that refer to the sacred, the divine and, at the same time, to work in the fields, rituals and magic.

"We are delighted to welcome to MAXXI a new work by Nico Vascellari, an artist already present in our Collections with other important works, starting with Revenge with which he won the Young Italian Art Prize in 2007" says Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, Director of MAXXI Arte.  "We are grateful to the artist and gloTM for art for the generosity of this donation and happy to renew, together with Triennale Milano, the fruitful collaboration between public institutions and private companies".

"With Falena, Nico Vascellari introduces a reflection on man, his work and the transformative forces of nature". Says Damiano Gullì, Curator for Contemporary Art and Public Program of Triennale Milano "The object-moth, already desemantised and resemantised by artists such as Andy Warhol, Franco Angeli and Enzo Mari, here disassociated from the hammer, maintains a dimension that is in any case political in order to open up to ancestral imagery in the recovery of a deeper primary magical element. We are happy that this work, thanks to the artist and gloTM for art, enters the Triennale Milano Collection and that this occasion is generative of a new collaboration with an institution as close to us as MAXXI".
