Chrysalis: the revolution of outdoor kitchens

Made from travertine sourced from the hills of Siena, Chrysalis combines the raw aesthetics of stone with minimalist design, transforming the kitchen into an outdoor sculpture.

With the new Chrysalis outdoor kitchen, created by architect Irene Goldberg, Vaselli redefines the interaction between design, material, and landscape. The kitchen, carved from a single block of Travertino Becagli, a material extracted from the Cipressi quarries in the Sienese hills, is a tribute to the raw yet refined beauty of natural stone. Travertino Becagli stands out for its rich chromatic variety, with hues tending toward copper, giving Chrysalis a unique and organic character.

This approach is not only aesthetic but also conceptual: the six blocks that form the kitchen are cut from the original stone, preserving the rough surfaces and creating a contrast between the raw and the refined. This material dialogue suggests the idea of an object in evolution, a work in constant transformation. Beyond its aesthetic quality, Chrysalis is a triumph of craftsmanship. Once cut, the travertine blocks are lightened and then hand-finished, a meticulous process that reflects the attention to detail typical of Italian custom design, turning this kitchen into a true sculpture. The “scapezzata” finish gives it a tactile, personality-rich appearance, perfectly harmonizing with the outdoor landscape, into which it seamlessly blends.

While designed for practical use, Chrysalis does not compromise on beauty. Each block serves a specific function: one for cooking, featuring burners, one for grilling, and one for the sink. The essential design approach currently does not include doors or built-in appliances, offering a minimalist outdoor solution. However, both the designer and the manufacturer are considering future integrations to expand the kitchen’s functionality while preserving its stylistic purity.

With dimensions of 519x60x92 cm and a total weight of around 3000 kg, Chrysalis is not just a kitchen but a monumental presence in space. Its solidity contrasts with the refinement of its surfaces, turning every daily gesture into a sensory experience. Chrysalis is not just a kitchen—it is a design piece that transcends its functionality to become a functional art installation, inviting reflection on the intrinsic beauty of materials and the relationship between nature and daily life, between nature and architecture.
