At Milan Design Week 2025, domusbreakfast@bocconi explores the connection between urban and relational regeneration, with design as a tool for connection. Among the key participants, Franke highlights the role of the kitchen as a vital space for nurturing relationships and renewing the social fabric

The 2025 edition of Milan Design Week once again proved to be a vibrant melting pot of ideas and visions, effectively spotlighting crucial themes in contemporary living. The now-traditional domusbreakfast@bocconi event, a result of the ongoing synergy between Domus magazine and Bocconi University, once again stood out as a prime platform for examining the multifaceted aspects of design and architectural thought, delving into the profound dynamics that shape our spaces and, consequently, our lives.

This year's central thread was the intricate and fascinating connection between urban and human regeneration – a parallelism with a surprising and almost poetic resonance, where the care of the urban fabric mirrors the need to renew and strengthen our social being.

The proceedings were opened by Stefano Caselli, Dean of SDA Bocconi School of Management, who then handed the floor to Walter Mariotti, Editorial Executive Director of Domus, to moderate the dialogue between experts from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. A panel of brilliant minds was convened to explore the synergies between the transformation of physical spaces and the evolution of human interactions.

Gianluca Vigato, Head of Advertising & Communication at Franke Home Solutions, offered a crucial perspective on the role of communication in fostering both urban and human regeneration. The contribution from Franke Home Solutions, a historic Swiss company at the forefront of kitchen solutions, underscored how the kitchen serves as the true "beating heart of the home," a dynamic space where family relationships are nurtured and renewed day in and day out.

"The kitchen is where family relationships are renewed daily," stated Vigato, "through shared gestures and conversations, from preparing a meal to eating together." This statement fully embodies Franke's vision: not just suppliers of household appliances, but facilitators of moments of human connection. "Our challenge," Vigato continued, "is to convey not only the aesthetic and functional quality of our products, but their silent yet fundamental role in fostering meaningful human connections, in creating that fertile ground where bonds are strengthened and deepened."

According to Gianluca Vigato, effective communication of urban regeneration projects (and the role of companies like Franke within them) must highlight both the tangible impact on the transformation of physical spaces and the intangible yet profoundly significant impact on the quality of relationships and community life. "We don't just sell appliances or sinks," he emphasized, "but the concrete possibility of creating moments of sharing, small or large occasions that, collectively, regenerate the emotional and social bonds that unite us."

The discussion then broadened with contributions from other experts who helped to delineate the complexity of urban and human regeneration from various angles. Giorgio Donà, creative force and Co-Founder of Studio Boeri Interiors, highlighted the role of well-designed spaces as catalysts for relationships. Stefania Carraro, Senior Lecturer on Sustainability at SDA Bocconi, emphasized the inseparable link between environmental and social sustainability. Andrea Margaritelli, President of INARC and the innovative mind behind SEED, as well as Brand Manager of Listone Giordano, stressed the importance of memory in urban regeneration processes. Finally, Keith Pillow, Founder and Creative Director of DAAAHaus, illustrated the power of creativity and community participation in transforming spaces. Alessia Bezzecchi of the REInnovation Lab provided an economic framework for the concept of "relational sustainability."

Against this backdrop of diverse perspectives, Gianluca Vigato's contribution for Franke offered a specific and pertinent viewpoint on the role of companies in communicating and promoting the intrinsic human values of regeneration, underscoring how the design and functionality of domestic spaces can also contribute to the renewal of the social fabric. The domusbreakfast@bocconi provided a multidisciplinary analysis of the complex challenge of overcoming urban and relational fragmentation. Within this context, Franke's input highlighted a crucial aspect concerning communication and the inherent role of products in fostering the genesis of meaningful human connections.
