The wind of change. The energy transition is designing a better future and driving the shift toward ever cleaner energy. With the international WinDesign contest, Enel is launching an ambitious challenge: to imagine the wind turbines of tomorrow which will integrate functionality, sustainability, innovation and design.

Their design is not limited to cutting-edge technology: there’s also a need to harmonize technology and the environment while minimizing the impact on the landscape. WinDesign was set up precisely with this in mind: Enel, through the platform Open Innovability®, invites architectural and engineering firms, companies, startups, students and universities to imagine a new generation of turbines, with three-blade rotors, that express both design and innovation.

Contest Phases. The contest consists of two phases. In the first, participants will submit preliminary ideas and creative designs by June 16, 2025. This phase will include two explanatory workshops, on April 15 and May 15, during which Enel will answer any questions participants may have.

Rewards. Projects admitted to the second phase will receive a preliminary reward of €5,000. During this phase, which ends on September 29, 2025, technical-economic feasibility reports for the proposed solutions will be developed and submitted.

The jury, which consists of Enel experts and representatives of the academic world, will select the winners, who will receive their rewards during a final event. The prizes will start at €50,000 for the third placed entry, €150,000 for the runner-up and reach €250,000 for the winner. There are also special prizes of €15,000 each for the best projects in terms of the following criteria, respectively: design, technical and economic feasibility, innovation, and sustainability. It isn’t possible to be awarded more than one prize.
