Pitsou Kedem carefully observes nature and its phenomena when designing, and for his collection of washbasins designed for Vaselli he started with the eruption of lava, which is surely one of the most fascinating natural processes.

"With its outflow, lava produces new life and creates a new truth in its environment. Lava flows as a red liquid when a volcano erupts, gushing out from the depths of the earth. When the lava cools, it darkens and transforms into an extremely hard black basalt stone,’ says Pitsou Kedem Architects.

The Lava basin reinterprets this concept through the combination of two blocks of different materials, representing two different shapes of stone. Made with craftsmanship and the result of a profound understanding of materials, the Lava basin redefines the boundaries between art and functionality. 

Vaselli recently presented a new version of the pedestal washbasin, which seeks this tension in another unique phenomenon: the aurora borealis. The extraordinary natural spectacle of the formation of incandescent light in the night sky is the inspiration for the latest object in the series.

Auroras often appear as a thin line along the sky stretching from horizon to horizon in brilliant green tones, inducing a sense of wonder, well-being and serenity in the observer. Lava accomplishes this change of scenery by grafting polished Verde Alpi Marble, recalling the brilliant vibrations of the polar night, into a Bianco Carrara Patinato with arctic tones.

Finally, the bi-material block is transformed into a bathroom cabinet thanks to the drawer and the pivot door on the corners that conceals the solid oak storage units. Here, too, the characteristic stone combination is proposed with the handles carved into the coloured marble inlay.
