The Taiwanese museum has announced "Out of Bounds: TFAM Expansion", a two-phase development plan that will establish the institution as one of the most important art centres in Asia.

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum is Taiwan's first museum of modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1983, the institution has undergone major improvements and reorganisations over nearly four decades to keep pace with the constant changes in the contemporary art world.

The museum in Taipei announces a new two-phase expansion project, entitled "Out of Bounds: TFAM Expansion", which is set to be a key moment in its evolution. This plan includes the construction of a new storage facility for the collections, which began in October this year, and a call for proposals for the design of a new building for the museum, due to be launched in January 2022.

Currently, the museum's collections include more than 5,300 works of art and documents from the modern and contemporary period in Taiwan. However, only 8 per cent of the museum's current space is devoted to the storage of works. The new expansion includes two new basement levels under an existing car park. The collections will be stored in separate areas with specific environmental controls to keep each work in the best condition. The new spaces will also be used to promote the protection and enhancement of Taiwan's artistic and cultural heritage.

The second phase of the museum's expansion consists of the design of new underground exhibition spaces, adjacent to the existing museum. Responding to the contemporary dynamics of art, the new building will present a variety of spaces to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and the development of new artistic methodologies. The new Taipei Fine Arts Museum vision envisions many perspectives and values the diversity of ideas. The Museum aims to become a reference centre for the development of Asian art and a place where a multitude of professionalism and approaches can meet.
