New lights for the Comprensorio Olivetti in Pozzuoli

With WIP Architetti's new design and Performance iN Lighting's products, the Comprensorio Olivetti in Pozzuoli has been updated with a contemporary lighting system, where natural and artificial light complement each other to provide the best visual comfort.

The Olivetti Comprensorio in Pozzuoli is probably the most beautiful factory in Italy: a unique example of harmony between industrial architecture and landscape. "Facing the most unique gulf in the world, this factory was built out of respect for the beauty of the place and so that beauty would be a comfort in everyday work," said the Italian entrepreneur in 1955, the year of its inauguration.

The author of the complex is architect Luigi Cosenza, with the collaboration of Adriano Galli, Pietro Ciaravolo, Piero Porcinai and Marcello Nizzoli. The facility is located 15 km from Naples, in a special position overlooking the Neapolitan gulf. Its cross-shaped floor plan adapts to the sloping terrain, while the large windows are designed to let in as much natural light as possible, creating bright working spaces.

Part of this industrial complex was recently renovated by WIP Architects, who worked with Performance iN Lighting to rethink the artificial lighting system. The new architectural intervention involved an area of approximately 3,600 sqm located on the ground floor of the building, and will house the offices of a multinational company in the energy sector.

The interiors have been stripped of unnecessary elements, obtaining full-height spaces with exposed installations. Inside, the open-space offices have been fitted with green walls to offer relaxation and purify the air, acoustic ceiling panels to improve the acoustic comfort of the working environment, and lighting which varies according to the use of the space.

The lighting design, using Performance iN Lighting's wide range of products, is intended to interact dynamically with the natural lighting. It is also planned with a view to significant energy savings – using only energy-efficient LED products – and to minimise visual fatigue for workers: each area has its own solutions to ensure optimum conditions.

The common areas of the Comprensorio Olivetti in Pozzuoli, redesigned by WIP Architetti

In accordance with the standard EN 12464-1 for lighting in workplaces, linear LED luminaires were chosen for pendant, ceiling or recessed installation. The selected products ensure proper glare limitation and high light uniformity. For the social and meeting areas, circular pendant luminaires with minimalist lines and different sizes were selected for ceiling or pendant installation. Ceiling-mounted downlights and wall-mounted luminaires complete Performance iN Lighting's range of products for transition areas.

The light output of the installed luminaires is controlled using the DALI digital protocol, which allows the lighting to be varied and adapted to outdoor conditions. Natural and artificial light complement each other to provide the ideal conditions at any time of day.
