Samsung's new lightweight and compact notebook is designed for the new generations who live and work in tune with digital devices.
Digital devices are increasingly integrated into our lives and the spaces we inhabit. They are much more than mere tools: machines that can influence our self-perception, interactions, conception of reality and agency.
For the 2016 Istanbul Design Biennale (entitled Are We Human?), curators Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley highlighted a mutual relationship between objects and humans: we design objects and they - in a way - design us (or are able to influence our life). Smartworking, video workouts, TV series marathons, shared writing, endless meetings on Zoom... are all possible thanks to laptops, tablets and smartphones. Not only are these devices changing our habits, but they are transforming themselves (being rethought by designers) to get closer to these habits. It is no coincidence that the Spanish architecture historian also conducted the 24/7 Bed project at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Inspired by a famous performance by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Colomina makes the bed the new symbol of contemporary work.
With its products and research, Samsung interprets and innovates these dynamics. The Samsung Galaxy Book Ion is a new laptop combining design and lightness, comfort and aesthetics. It is conceived to follow the dynamism and flexibility of contemporary life.
The device weighs only 970 grams and is only 12.9 cm thick. With a sleek aluminium casing, it boasts exceptional aesthetics, but is also designed for strength and durability. If multitasking and flexibility are the new imperatives in the era of remote working, then Samsung's product is an ideal solution for the contemporary world. A key feature of the new notebook is its display, which with its ultra-thin bezel offers a wide and immersive view. This reduces the boundaries between the screen and reality, or rather between the physical and digital dimensions, as is happening in our lives.
The QLED display, with 100% VDE-certified colour volume, also achieves unprecedented levels of realism. Samsung Galaxy Book Ion is at its best in Outdoor mode: the maximum brightness of 600 nits enables use in the open air.
Another aspect that is more relevant than ever is the interconnection between laptops, smartphones and the various wearables by Samsung.
Samsung Galaxy Book Ion not only makes it easy to transfer data, check notifications and communicate between devices, but also, thanks to the Wireless PowerShare system, to recharge them by simply placing them on the notebook.
Last but not least, the button for reading fingerprints is the gem that, like the other features of the Samsung Galaxy Book Ion, gives us the measure of how much the product is aligned with the needs of today. The privacy and security of our data is in fact one of the most pressing issues of today.
