City Bike Presence Device

Studio José de la O created a series of DIY devices for bikes, which produce a friendly, rhythmic sound, creating a pleasant soundscape where the cyclist goes.

As the use of bikes around Mexico City is rapidly growing and local government are building more and more infrastructure for this to happen, the non-cyclist population is still learning to cope with this new trend. One of the biggest issues is the “invisibility” when one is riding a bike in Mexico City. In an environment packed with cars, people, visual information and noise, is difficult for pedestrians to notice cyclist riding in the streets.

This project intends to create a way to make cyclist more present by creating a DIY device that produces a friendly, rhythmic sound, creating a pleasant soundscape while the cyclist pass. This project was created under Studio José de la O’s Project Friday Initiative, where every intern at the studio develops a speculative or critical design project every Friday for six months that he or she can publish in their portfolio once their internship is finished.
