Larry Sultan a SFMOMA

SFMOMA presenta “Here and Home” la prima retrospettiva completa che analizza il lavoro e la carriera del fotografo californiano Larry Sultan.

Questa primavera il Museo di Arte Moderna di San Francisco (SFMOMA) presenta due mostre fotografiche su due artisti dalle visioni diverse e un passato comune: Larry Sultan (1946–2009) e Mike Mandel (nato nel 1950).

  “Larry Sultan: Here and Home” è la prima retrospettiva che esamina il lavoro e la carriera del fotografo californiano, esplora i suoi 35 anni di carriera dai primi progetti collaborativi degli anni ‘70 alle fotografie in stile documentario. I temi principali sono la casa e la famiglia, la costruzione di un’identità, l’aspetto e la narrazione. Testimone della vita domestica e degli scenari suburbani, in tutto il suo lavoro Sultan ha esaminato fantasia, desiderio e spostamento.

Cresciuto nella valle di San Fernando, Sultan si trasferì nella California settentrionale nei primi anni settanta ma continuò a trarre ispirazione dall’architettura, dall’atmosfera e dallo spirito della California meridionale della sua giovinezza. Con una vita da educatore, Sultan ha insegnato presso il San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) per dieci anni dal (1978–1988) e al California College of Arts (CCA) per vent’anni anni (1989–2009), dove ha lavorato come professore emerito di fotografia.
