Picture diaries about Chinese manufacturers, surreal North Korean and rich and poor schools all around the world are among  the best photo stories of 2015.

In our selection of this year’s best photo stories ten photographic diaries from all over the world.


Made in China Diary is a project initiated by the Swiss designer pair Anaïde Gregory Studio. It is first and foremost a travel log retracing a five-month journey through manufacturing China.

– Sara Moiola tells the story of Alberto Burri’s work in Gibellina Vecchia, an open-air cathedral caught in an infinity yard, with the spontaneous vegetation as the only spectator.

– In Paris Abstract, Michael Wolf explores the urban landscape, fascinated with density and life in cities. Formal in nature, Paris Abstract lyrically expresses both the architectural complexity and density of the Parisian landscape.

– Especially for Domusweb, here is a glimpse of the Expo construction site as seen by Delfino Sisto Legnani less than 24 hours before the inauguration.

– New York-based – and NY lover – photographer Max Touhey captured the last images of Eero Saarinen’s 1962 terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport before its transformation into an hotel.

– With his ongoing photo series Chris Forsyth captures the beauty of the Montreal’s metro stations, built between the 60s and 70s, each one by a different architect.

– Soviet-era fittings and kitsch retro props influence Pyongyang’s interiors. Oliver Wainwright  show us their childlike image of carefree wonder, as if Disney’s imagineers had been put in charge of the decor.

– With his last project James Mollison collects scenes of laughter, tears, and games from rich and poor schools all around the world, demonstrating the intense experiences which happen in the playground.

Zelfbouw, “self-build” in Dutch, is a current planning trend in The Netherlands responding to the financial and real estate crises. Photographer Sonia Mangiapane visited a number of these new suburbs across the country to capture their personalities and peculiarities.

– Roughly 50 years on, Iñaki Bergera’s photographs are skilful examples of the topographical tradition originally inspired by Ed Ruscha to objectively describe territorial signs.
