Foster + Partners to design the new Riyadh international airport

The King Salman International Airport will be one of the largest in the world, aiming to become a significant logistic hub between East and West.

Foster + Partners’ proposal master plan has won the King Salman International Airport competition. The new airport in Riyadh – the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia – will also include the already existing terminals – named after King Khalid – and aims to act as a significant logistic hub between East and West.

With six parallel runways and a total area of circa 57 square kilometers, it is expected to become one of the largest in the world, an “aerotropolis”. The infrastructure will also offer 12 square kilometers of airport support, residential and recreational facilities, as well as retail space. The project aims to accommodate up to 120 million travelers by 2030 and 185 million by 2050, with the ability to process 3.5 million tons of cargo.

The King Salman International Airport will also achieve LEED Platinum certification, incorporating innovative sustainable measures into its design and being powered by renewable energy.
