Designed in Tokyo by Shohei Shigematsu and OMA New York. Harajuku Quest will be a new commercial and cultural center, as well as the first mixed-use underground building in Omotesando.
Located between Omotesando and Oku-Harajuku – close to some of the major urban destinations such as Yoyogi Park, Meiji Jingu and Harajuku Station – the 84,000-square-meter project aims to help transform the area by facilitating a new flow of people through a series of alleys, squares and commercial zones for informal meetings and exchanges, coming from both Omotesando and Oku-Harajuku, and connecting these two areas for the first time.
In response to the two different contexts, a single volume was modeled. A sculptural and transparent shape stands on the side of Omotesando, backing to the top to bring light and to the ground to open a walkway channeled towards Oku-Harajuku. A series of stepped terraces create different types of open spaces and on the second level, a large square will host cultural events and meetings, extending the life of the neighborhood to the site and creating activities that exceed the usual retail experience.
Construction of the complex began in October and is expected to end in February 2025.
