Canoo unveils a multi-purpose electric delivery van that looks like a box on wheels

The Californian startup plans to sell the new vehicle for 33,000 dollars, with production set for late 2022.

Electric mobility startup Canoo, known for its electric car prototype that defies traditional car design, is planning an expansion to commercial vans. The company unveiled its plans to build a new Multi-Purpose Delivery Vehicle (MPDV) based on the same electric platform it co-developed with Hyundai. The startup aims to offer the vehicle at a relatively low price, starting from $33,000, to attract small and medium companies.

The van has been designed with driving comfort and extreme versatility in mind, with a sharp look that maximises load space while maintaining a small footprint compared to gas-powered vans. It will be available in two models. The MPDV1, the smaller version, is powered by a 147kW electric motor and can be equipped with a 40, 60 or 80KWh battery with an estimated range of, respectively, 177km, 306km or 402km.

The MPDV2, the larger version, is a bit larger and longer (2.19m X 5.21m), but is powered by the same motor and can be equipped with the same selection of batteries. The MPDV will be available initially in the US, but Canoo already plans its expansion to Europe and other markets. Pre-orders are already open with a refundable 100$ downpayment, but the boxy electric vans, in the best-case scenario, won’t hit the road before 2023.
