Venice Biennale: curator and artists pull out of the Russia Pavilion

Raimundas Malašauskas stated that he could not continue his work for political and human reasons.

Raimundas Malašauskas has decided to resign as curator of the Russia Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale of Art. “I can not go on working on our project following the military invasion and bombing of Ukraine by Russia. This war is politically and humanly intolerable”.

Also the artists Alexandra Sukhareva and Kirill Savchenkov withdrew on their own initiative, and as a result the entire Russian Pavilion will remain closed.

“I was born and I studied in Lithuania, when it was still part of the Soviet Union. I experienced the dissolution of the USSR in 1989, and I have seen and enjoyed how my nation has developing ever since”, Malašauskas explained. “The idea of going back or going towards subjugation to Russia or to another empire is simply intolerable”.
