Mini-courses to envision the future of cities after the pandemic

We need to think hard to find more equal, sustainable, honest ways to inhabit the planet and specially our cities. Domus and Accademia ED propose a series of three mini-courses online to envision what architects are working on to implement the topics that the pandemic has made decidedly urgent for every human being on earth. We start on 9 October with “Extreme Sustainability”. We will discuss what can and must be done by passing certifications, what are the most advanced experiments, the ecological and economic impact of sustainability in architecture, the utopian visions that stimulate research. But also the very idea of sustainability, a word with many meanings that goes beyond the discipline. We invited TAMassociati, Italy, White Architekter, Sweden, and Arup Italy who have made sustainability the focus of their research.

On 16 October “Architecture of the commons” is the second one. How do you design the common spaces shared by multiple people in buildings, and the common spaces between buildings? In this webinar Domus proposes to approach this theme with very different points of view ranging from a vision at the urban scale to the more particular one of buildings with specific functions and from the theoretical approach to the realization. We will talk with Javier Arpa, professor at TU Delft, Gilles Delalex, Muoto architecture studio in Paris and the Italians Susanna Mirza, Alberto Pietroforte, architects in Rome.

Last but not least, “Homes not houses” on 23 October. Something happened in our private spaces during the pandemic, we all used our homes in a different way, slightly transforming the way we use space. We realized that we need more flexible spaces and furniture, that the kitchen is really at the center of the house, that there is a need for natural light and places to meet neighbors. In this webinar Domus invites speakers with a long experience in such questions to envision our future homes. Piovene Fabi, curators of Biennale Interieur and Sophie Delhay architect and Christoph Grafe, writer and architecture hitorian, will be our guests.

All the three webinars will take place on Fridays on the Teams platform from 4:00pm to 7:30pm.
