Domus 1016 on newsstands

In September’s issue: the Central European University by O’Donnell + Tuomey in Budapest; two books created by Sottsass with a Como-based litographer in 1999 and a Residential building in Switzerland by burkhalter sumi architekten. For free with Domus the Green supplement.

In his editorial Nicola Di Battista express a sense of malaise: that of living in Italy, our extremely fragile and defenceless country now incapable of meeting with dignity even the most elementary needs of an advanced society. But this is not a document of surrender; it is a call to action because there is much to be done.

Phase one of a complex project in the centre of Budapest showcases Irish duo O’Donnell + Tuomey’s talent for surgical interventions in a historic fabric. Traditional materials are coupled with contemporary spaces in a successful attempt to turn an architectural interior into an authentic part of the city.

Alfredo Taroni, litographer in Como, revealed to us Epifanie brevi e Trattato di Architettura, two volumes created by Sottsass with him in 1999. This month’s school is the Università della Campania, who uses the discipline as a design-related tool of utmost use to the architect. In Naples, a former 16th-century cloister in a densely populated context suffering from serious building, social and economic decline is the focus of an ambitious urban-regeneration programme by the Made in Cloister Foundation. The elzeviro by Pier Paolo Pasolini is an excerpt from Appendice a “Le mura di Sana’a”, press conference of the Italian-Arab League, 1974.
