Studio Izaskun Chincilla designed the new offices of the co-working company utopic_US in Madrid, driving inspiration from Tokyo and New York, and targeted to millennials and the sharing economy.

“Madrid cultural history could be described looking at the transformations that younger generations have imposed. Nowadays the millenials have convinced us of the networking importance and the advantages of sharing. They are starting to transform Madrid once again and utopic_US is a project that is part of a coworking network that tries to become a main reference for this generation to transform Madrid, turning it into a capital of creative entrepreneurship”, the architects explain.

The coworking phenomenon is intrinsicly associated to the urban lifestyle. The density and diversity of people and opportunities produced by a big metropolis, encourages the apparition of places whose fundamental purpose is sharing creativity. The main concept was to to mix inspirations and memories of two cities strengthening the link between design and user by means of interaction and surprise.

The selection of the two cities comes from the fact that they belong the universal imagination. New York is still the emblem of an opened city where people go to invent and succeed. Whereas Tokyo remains as the symbol of a symbiosis between latest technology and ancestral culture. “Two cities where everyone wants to travel to, where anyone wants to go back to, no matter how many times you’ve been to and two cities whose landmarks are recognized all around the globe.”

Izaskun selected a versatile and movable equipment that is a result of modifying and transforming industrial and contemporary furniture such as beds into tables, bunk banks into Skype rooms and so on. They also introduced a great amount of color, employing different fabrics, ceramics and painted papers, in order to inspire the users with things that can be transformed into something unexpected.
