Imagine New Days

#156 Engineers, designers and creatives have helped Aisin develop personal mobility solutions for future lifestyles presented during Milan Design Week. #salone2015

We live in a global world where cities expand non-stop and spaces, especially public ones, are increasingly oversized for humans.

The ensuing problems posed to indoor circulation have triggered a need for alternatives to walking. Designers will also increasingly have to consider the population’s rising average age.

Aisin, ILY-I

The product of Aisin Seiki Co. research and designed by Setsu & Shinobu Ito, ILY-I is motorised furniture for indoor use. Powered by a battery and steered by a direction controller, it is also fitted with a speed-control sensor. This intelligent armchair allows for compact movements such as walking and rotation. Despite a light appearance, giving the impression it hovers over the ground, the seat is solidly structured and gently curved to ergonomically envelop the human body. A round and shaped base allows precise movements and everything is contained within its rotation radius. Sensors mounted on ILY-I’s two sides project light outwards and are interactive, switching on in the proximity of another ILY-I or person. This basic model can be further developed to become multipurpose: ILY-I can be equipped with a video camera, visual and voice communication and even help with household cleaning by directly interacting with its user.
