Domus 984 on newsstands

In October, Domus pays homage to its founder Gianni Mazzocchi; features the unpublished work by Matthias Mulitzer in Austria, and new works by Alejandro Aravena in Chile and by Pierre-Alain Dupraz in Geneva. Following a focus on the Italian interior tradition, we present the Fontana and Klein exhibition in Milan.

In October’s provocatively titled editorial “Abominable Journalists”, Nicola Di Battista tackles information in today’s world, with special emphasis on the mainstream press and its irrelevant and superficial approach to architecture.

Domus visits the Monastery of Maria im Paradies near Salzburg, commenced by Austrian architect Matthias Mulitzer while still a student; Alejandro Aravena’s Centro de Innovación UC in Santiago, Chile; and Pierre-Alain Dupraz’s Peace Walkway in Geneva.

This issue’s focus on interiors starts with Manolo De Giorgi’s view that the Italian culture holds the secret to the concept of spatial interpretation and how to shift the culture of living from the recent past to the immediate future without huge leaps. Then comes Servino’s refurbishment of an apartment in Caserta and a previously unpublished Luigi Caccia Dominioni one for Villa San Valerio in Lombardy.

Konstantin Grcic explains how he works to Domus; Matteo Lai, architect and CEO of the startup Empatica, shows that his training offers the ideal preparation for managing the complexity of a company; and a virtuous example of Italian enterprise is seen in the form of wooden glasses by FEB31st, launched three years ago by a young team.

The Anselm Kiefer exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts offers an excuse to take a close look at all the German artist’s work; and, in conjunction with the double Lucio Fontana/Yves Klein exhibition in Milan, we republish a 1968 piece by Fontana on the subject of space in art.

Domus continues its school analysis with a visit to the Unit 12 Design Chair of The Cass School of Architecture, held by Heyes and St John, and strongly anchored to last 20 years’ work; and to the Faculty of Architecture of Ku Leuven, Flanders’ leading university, which officially become a Faculty last year.

“The longer the route between destinations, the better. The more time you spend between destinations, the better.”, says Xavier Vendrell, the author of Feedback, on Chicago. Pier Luigi Celli’s Elzeviro draws on memories and analysis, examining the margins of the city to regain a sense of its development and evidence of the disintegration of its soul.

Domus also remembers its publisher Gianni Mazzocchi, with a number of archive documents illustrating the history of the publishing house’s architectural titles. Last, a peak at Il possibile necessario by Vittorio Gregotti, who will have four books out soon.
