Energy Addicts

In our modern life energy is everything, it’s the force that drives economies globally, many times disregarding the consequences.

Naomi Kizhner was interested into imagine what would the world be like once it has experienced a steep decline in energy resources and what will we do to feed our energy addiction.

Although there are a lot of developments of renewable energy resource, the human body is a natural resource for energy that is constantly renewed, as long as we are alive, and maybe some time in the future the only thing that will remain.
As well as she wanted to embed the post-humanistic approach, that sees the human body as a resource, a vessel.

The main headline of this research was “biological wealth”, the aim is to imagine how a society would behave once the wealth of it is stipulated by personal biological abilities. And how can we enhance those abilities in order to produce more energy. For example, if we smoke we will increase our blood pressure and potentially produce more energy.

Technologically we are not too far, there are outgoing developments of energy harvesting devices that relate to the body, although most of them are based on the bodies willful movement such as walking. Kizhner choose a “default” activities of the human body because she believes that eventually we are kind of lazy.

In the design aesthetic itself the designer wanted to reach an organic-mechanic feel and that is in order to contradict the two elements, the body vs. the machine. The accessories are made from a biopolymer clear shell and the “heart” of it as well as the needles are made from gold. Gold is known for its good qualities to be body related. The prototypes have been all 3d printed.

Through this work Naomi Kizhner wanted to think about/ consider possible futures, or mainly to encourage people/ consumers in the modern society to think about their possible future. Since in our modern life we are literally addicted to electricity, she wanted to provoke the thought about how far will we go to in order to “feed” our addiction in the world of declining resources.
