Reunited under the title Savoir-faire et Modernité, the
results of a collaborative workshop confronting age-old ways of making and modern techniques are on display at Villa Noailles, Hyères, as part of international design festival Design Parade 7. Organised by Sèvres - Cité de la céramique and the Fondation
d'entreprise Hermès, the workshop was undertaken by students
of the ENSCI - Les Ateliers (National School for
Industrial Design) and Sciences-Po, Paris, over a period of eight months. Accompanied by a tutor from their school, and through the course of lectures by experts, visits to other workshops, and collaborative work, the students' current
knowledge has been tested, along with their
awareness of the challenges apparent within
their chosen fields.
The confrontation of the terms "savoir-faire" and
"modernity" is deliberately provocative, both
within a national and an international context
affected by different crises and increasingly
interested in high quality production. The student's creativity seeks
to uncover new areas of development for the
benefit of contemporary craftsmanship and to
show the degree to which this latter may in fact
be considered modern.

The exhibition presents a laboratory concept devised by the students in order to accompany leaders of innovative projects, within the domain of exceptional craftsmanship. The potential of this LAPIE (Artisanal Laboratory for Innovative and Experimental Production) will be expressed through three theoretical scenarios, materialised within the production of objects, texts, images, and the wealth of ideas which have characterised this workshop since it began in September, 2011.
