An optical ramen and gyoza bar in Australia

Landed in Newcastle, the Susuru noodle bar breaks away from the local traditional style through the futuristic design of Ben Berwick.

Newly-founded architectural studio Prevalent designed the interiors of the Susuru Ramen and Gyoza bar in the heart of Newcastle, Australia. Situated in a prominent building from 1906, the space breaks away from the traditional mining style of the area. The design takes cues from the Tokyo metro station and train design, with a predominantly white interior that acts as a backdrop to a yellow highlight.

A relevant aspect of the project lays in the graphic design of menu boards, signage, tablet covers and doors that become focal points. These elements are cycled seasonally, much like advertisements in metro stations and train carriages. Much of the materials used are locally sourced, particularly to re-liven the metal industry in the city with designs of furniture.
