Until January 20, 2008, Milan’s
Palazzo Reale is hosting a retrospective
dedicated to Vivienne Westwood.
With her fashion debut at the age of 30 in
London in 1971, she was the “official
designer” of the Punk movement
(collecting fines for indecent exposure
and being arrested for vilification of
the Queen in 1977 after accompanying
the Sex Pistols singing God Save the
Queen). Her exceptional creative verve in
the ’80s took her to catwalks all
over the world.
Her clothes have always
stemmed from a subversive idea of
costume while using symbols, geometry
and materials to reflect the designer’s
commitment to social and political
themes, centred on female anatomy and
the accessory as an erotic appendage.
On show are numerous garments
and videos of fashion shows. Sponsors
of the event include Molteni & C who
have presented a collection of sofas with
fabrics by the designer.cSilvia Monaco
