The exhibition spans a forty year career, a large part of which was spent (well) as head of the division for design and product development at Braun. Since 1955, what was immediately referred to as “Braun style” – the logical continuation of the principles preached by the Bauhasu and the use of the guidelines from the school at Ulm – has changed and influenced general opinion, showing many what product aesthetics means, in the name of optimising both form and function through design. The exhibition also covers work carried out by Rams for other companies, furniture designed for Vitsoe and de Padova, lighting for Tecnolumen and a set of handles developed for FSB, as well as his teaching at the University of Hamburg and his role as president of the German Design Council.
A life dedicated to design quality, summed up well in the title of the exhibition “Less but Better”, a take on Mies’s “Less is more”.
