Tall block and pavilion at QT8

The affordable-housing block stands solitarily at 11 storeys high and oriented for the best exposure to sunlight, in the Quartiere Sperimentale built for the 8th Triennale (1947).

The entrances and the apartments’ small kitchens and bathrooms are on the west side. The east wall contains the loggias leading to the apartments, featuring an interesting three-step stagger to prevent outsiders from seeing into the bedrooms and living rooms.

The ground-floor portico is decorated with large coloured mosaics by the painters Crippa, Dova and Soldati.

The round two-storey pavilion (7.5-metre radius), later donated to the City Council, housed a permanent exhibition on the QT8 and offered shelter in adverse weather conditions to children keen to play on the grass in front. A semicircular feature comprising the stairs to the lower floor and toilets was inserted into a single large space. The large cantilever roof slab housed mechanisms for opening and for regulating the light. The semicircular exterior featured artwork by Bottoni and a blackboard for children’s games.
