Sculptures by Pomodoro in Madrid
For the first time, Madrid dedicates an extensive retrospective to Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. Around twenty works created over the last twenty years form the centre of an exhibition set up at the Marlborough gallery. “Making a sculpture is like writing”, stated the sculptor from the Romagna region of Italy, born in 1926 and who is already making preparations for the next Spanish date, a homage to Eduardo Chillida.
In the exhibition, monumental sculptures sit alongside some lesser known works such as small illustrated books. An entire wall is dominated by an enormous mural in glass fibre, “La battaglia” (1995), 12 metres by 3. “I am mainly interested in invention”, explained Pomodoro when talking about this piece that has been inspired by the great masters of the Renaissance: Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello and Raffaello.
