The magical art of Francesco Tomassi

Architect and painter, more latterly mostly painter is in the limelight with a series of works which have captured the critics of contemporary art and lead to a series of exhibitions in Italy and abroad which have made him famous. The exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale in Lucca brings together around forty pieces dating from the end of the seventies up until today through which can be seen the artistic development and enigmatic world of Francesco Tomassi.

Amongst the major themes developed by the artist is that of nature under attack from industrial progress, polluted and violated but also able to give life to a new disquieting one. And then there is the mystery of love, which pushes his painting to look into the great myths of modern man: sport, music, success, the family, cinema, normality and diversity. Behind all his subjects is a common denominator: the certainty of belonging to a strong figurative culture, where colour and line evoke the great names of the nineteenth and twentieth century Courbet and Munch, Boecklin and Gauguin, Bacon and Balthus.
