The Rediscovered Harmony of FLAT

A historic 20th-century villa is reborn under the vision of AMDB Architects. FLAT windows and doors by PB | Windows on the World, made of oak, blend past and present, transforming spaces.

FLAT, a symbol of elegance and versatility, is not just a window, but an element that defines the soul of any architecture. In the heart of an elegant residential villa from the early 20th century, where time seemed to have stopped the breath of history, a bold vision sparked a surprising rebirth. AMDB Architects, a firm known for combining design rigor with an acute sensitivity to contemporary language, orchestrated an intervention that reworks and transcribes the building's character. The goal? To preserve its original soul, its scars and splendor, while infusing it with a distinctly contemporary energy and functionality. It is a dialogue between past and future, woven with skill and respect. In this symphony of recovery and innovation resonates FLAT, the Made in Italy window frame signed PB | Windows on the World. The choice of the all-wood oak version was not a stylistic whim, but a thoughtful decision aimed at creating a material and visual continuity between the historic envelope and the new, clean geometries. Windows that are not simple openings, but true architectural contrivances all with a single sash, stretching upward up to three meters.  These immense glass surfaces not only flood the interiors with a light that to call "natural" would be reductive - we are talking about an ethereal, almost pictorial quality of light - but also radically transform the relationship between the domestic environment and the surrounding landscape. No longer a barrier, but a transparent bridge that erases boundaries.

The idea behind FLAT was not born by chance, but has deep roots, developed as early as the prototype phase for a luxury penthouse in New York City. That initial intuition, powerful and innovative, was carried forward without compromise, keeping its original strength intact.

Today, FLAT proves to be an architectural solution of rare elegance, capable of balancing a formal essentiality with a material depth that caresses the senses. Its versatility is surprising: it adapts with disarming naturalness to disparate contexts, from rustic villas surrounded by greenery to Baroque mansions laden with history, from neoclassical interiors to converted industrial buildings. This is thanks to its modular structure, a true chameleon system that ensures seamless integration, both in the most delicate conservative restorations-where every detail is sacred-as well as in new buildings, where it immediately defines an avant-garde aesthetic.

The range of available configurations is a demonstration of flexibility and attention to detail. They range from all-wood variants, for those who love the authentic warmth of the material, to wood-aluminum and wood-glass combinations, for more contemporary solutions. There is no shortage of bold versions, with imposing profiles ranging from 60 to 105 millimeters, capable of giving character to any facade. And for historic buildings, there is even a version with a classic glazing bead, a small but significant homage to tradition that does not sacrifice functional modernity. The design possibilities are virtually limitless: arched openings that recall ancient medieval or Renaissance architecture, sliding doors that reinvent spaces, and special solutions capable of supporting load-bearing capacities of up to 300 kilograms per sash and reaching majestic heights of four meters, transforming entire walls into breathtaking stained glass windows.

Each project that sees the adoption of FLAT is not the result of an isolated choice, but the culmination of an open and stimulating discussion between designers and clients. In this fertile dialogue, made up of ideas, listening and shared vision,  solutions capable of expressing precise and unmistakable identities take shape. FLAT demonstrates, with its discreet but incisive presence, how the window and door frame is not a mere functional element, but an integral and living part of the architectural language. It makes a decisive contribution to forging the distinctive character of any space, defining its light, perspective and, ultimately, its very soul. FLAT is a reference, a quotation, an element, a feature that fits everywhere and in everything.
