Piero Lissoni for Sanlorenzo: a floating villa

The Sanlorenzo SX112 offers a new way of experiencing the sea. The yacht creates a unique connection with the marine context thanks to spatial and technological solutions inspired by the world of architecture.

Quality, details and the search for a simple, timeless style are the principles that guide Massimo Perotti in the creation of Sanlorenzo's yachts.

The entrepreneur, owner of the shipyards since 2005, considers yachts as design houses, and for this reason he turns to the top names in the design world: from Citterio Viel to Patricia Urquiola, from John Pawson to Piero Lissoni.

Sanlorenzo Yachts is a brand conceived as a nautical "boutique", with a limited production of just a few projects per year, but capable of creating a unique combination of creativity, research, industrial perfection and craftsmanship.

The Italian company presented the new SX112 model, the jewel in the SX crossover line, which offers a new way of experiencing the sea, creating a profound connection between the interior spaces and the sea. The aforementioned Piero Lissoni – an architect and designer who needs no introduction – was commissioned by Sanlorenzo for the interior design, while the vessel's external lines were designed by Zuccon International Project.

The main deck is the hallmark of the SX112 yacht, conceived as an open space running from stern to bow in a continuous environment. Here we find in succession, without divisions, a living area, a bar area and a dining room. The large windows overlooking the sea create absolute continuity between inside and outside.

"The SX112 is another experimental model, like every new model we work on with Sanlorenzo. In this case we have brought an even more architectural attitude: it is a floating building. We have connected the spaces exactly as in a building through very technological openings that relate the inside to the outside and vice versa. We actually built a floating villa," explains the architect.

The secret ingredient of Lissoni's designs is the staircase, which in this case connects all the decks. "The element that links all three models in the SX line is the vertical connection. Usually on boats the connections are almost always serviceable or sometimes incredibly decorative. As an architect, I thought of inserting absolutely surprising signs into the boats, such as the stairs, which are invented specifically for each model," says Lissoni.

Details and materials create a unique link between Japanese and Italian living cultures. Tatami is used in the cabins and on the main deck to cover floors, ceilings and walls. The bathrooms are enriched by marble surfaces, while teak is the material of choice for the exterior. The best Made in Italy companies have been selected to furnish the floating home: Alpi, B&B Italia, Boffi, Cassina, Flos, FontanaArte, Glas Italia, Living Divani, Oluce and TechnoGym.
