UNStudio transforms former Dutch bank HQs into cutting-edge office spaces

UNStudio has recently completed the refurbishment of the Dutch banking and financial services company Rabobank former headquarters, transforming them into a contemporary government office building of 32,000 square meters, called “Fellenoord 15”.

The pre-existing building had a robust shell, which allowed the original structure to be maintained, thus saving about 40% of the carbon footprint compared to a new construction. Sustainable techniques were also used for the demolition of the façade. The transformed building uses geothermal heating and cooling, water-based climate ceilings and solar panels. The floor plans have been optimised to make the most of the openings and natural light, with a positive impact on the energy balance of the building and on the comfort and productivity of its occupants.

A dense network of sensors, advanced applications and smart technologies will significantly improve building conditions and management, reducing energy consumption and making space use more efficient. They can trace energy consumption patterns, identifying possible inefficiencies and making adjustments in real time. In addition, with the design of a new entrance and the removal of parking on the side of the building in front of the station, Fellenoord 15 now connects more smoothly with the surrounding urban space.
