“iLobola” is the title of a new collection of large-scale ceramic and bronze sculptures by South African artist Zizipho Poswa that evokes the symbolism of the lobola, or bride-wealth. This series gives its name to the artist's first solo exhibition hosted by the Southern Guild gallery in Cape Town, on display until July 1st. Each of the 12 sculptures recalls a part of the lobola process, an ancient African tradition that in Poswa's works celebrates the resilience and assertive role of women in African society. “My inspiration comes from my culture, and from the path I have walked as a woman,” Poswa says. “I am the woman I am because of my heritage. The gifts I’ve been given and sacrifices I have made have brought me to this moment. I stand in tribute to the other women who have shared the load.” The exhibition is accompanied by a short film, produced by Southern Guild and made in collaboration with BMW South Africa, which in continuity with the message of the sculptures pays tribute to the tenacity of African women.
