The projects for the future green district of San Siro

The redevelopment of San Siro will not only include the construction of a new stadium, but the creation of an entire district in dialogue with the city. Here are the two projects currently in competition.

A green district dedicated to sport entirely eco-sustainable, but also a cultural and recreational center to make the new area of San Siro a social gathering space for leisure time. The project, of which the first renderings are already visible, starts from an idea of redevelopment that wants a dialogue with the rest of the city, taking some distance from the old and famous definition given by the Times del Meazza: “a spaceship landed in the outskirts of Milan”. And so there will be a jogging track, a skateboard park, a gym, a soccer field, a basketball court, a playground entirely dedicated to children, a space for theatrical performances, a sports museum, a climbing wall and even a cable car that from the south tower of the third ring of the Meazza would take people to the ground. A free district open to all 365 days.

This is how the designers of the Populous and Manica Sportium studios imagined the whole San Siro area and the “Scala del calcio” when they will be re-functionalized. The projects could also include a paddle court, indoor gyms, adventure park, technology hub and a cinema. Populous renderings show, in addition to the cable car, a restaurant at the top of the south tower of the third ring and imagine an athletics track rising above the second ring. Manica-Sportium, on the other hand, inserts trees at the top of the second ring and designs the “San Siro Sport and Entertainment Park” entirely in the green. Overall the green areas would be 106,000 sqm, which is double the current 56,000 sqm.
