Schreibtischuhr

The exhibition “Schreibtischuhr” at the Galerie Meyer Kainer in Vienna starts from the relation between writing and time, object and text, hence the title Schreibtischuhr (writing desk clock). The time of the written is here considered as a point of origin and analysis rather than the duration of the spoken.

The time of the desk that begins and ends in silence and is a place of reading and/or writing. A place for the production of scenarios and a site of critical writing, correspondence and thought placed into written form. Works in the exhibition are “on and of” philosophy, forcing a material to speak, as a more productive way to go beyond image and caption. A series of precisely selected desks from various moments in the modern period are displayed in the gallery. The desks carry a series of short texts by philosopher John Rajchman, both existing and new that have addressed the questions brought up by the general theme of “Language in Contemporary Art”.

This framing component is accompanied by a sequence of horizontal wall based works by Gillick. The surrounding critical context of the exhibition is a series of works by artists who take different approaches to questions of time, scenario production and identity. Featured artists are Noah Barker, Loretta Fahrenholz, Liam Gillick, Louise Lawler, Ahmet Öğüt, Philippe Parreno, Seth Price, John Rajchman, Cameron Rowland, Lawrence Weiner and Heimo Zobernig.
