400 Rabbits

In order to design the interiors of 400 Rabbits restaurant in London, Junction and Richardson Studios fit together an Italian pizzeria, a British beer bar and an ancient Aztec myth.

Two Brixton-based studios had the task to combine an Italian restaurant in London that served British beers with an Aztec inspiration, all in one space. Richardson studio took care of the interior design, whilst Junction Studio handled the branding of 400 Rabbits.

Fed up with the all too familiar sight of caged light bulbs, exposed brick and rusty metal, the clients wanted to reflect their rather specific inspiration. According to Aztec folklore, two fermentation loving gods got it together one night and spawned a bunch of offspring known as the Centzon Totochtin, aka 400 Rabbit Gods. These rabbit gods liked to party, drink and generally get into mischief. So 400 Rabbits is a celebration of the legacy of these gods.

Stylistically, Italian, British and Aztec was too much to take in, so the designs decided to focus on the mood. Above all it had to feel fun, with an inventive take on pizza far from appearing traditional. Red and green became pink and jade, while the joinery and details were kept simple using standard timbers and pegboard to create a layered back-drop to the colours and artwork that fill the space, reflecting the start-up nature of the brand.

“The wall graphics were designed to create the sort of atmosphere that might come about if you filled the room with 400 drunk rabbits”, the designers Emma Scott-Child and Celia Richardson explain. “Basically a lot of fun with splashes of colour and a set of graphics that can be reborn again and added to as the space grows over time”.
