For the exhibition design studio ma0 applied the so called principle of productive set-up: a productive process where waste is minimized and the life of the materials used does not end on the last day of the exhibition, but continues elsewhere, maybe building a roof, furnishing a room, becoming part of another exhibition. The show becomes one moment in a longer life cycle, that starts and continues beyond the walls of the museum.
It is not always possible to think and create such a set-up. Favourable conditions are needed so that the theme of the exhibition, the space that is used, and the ideas of the curators, may support a choice which is actually about connecting the ephemeral event to longer processes and extended spaces.
Using humble material usually employed on construction sites, such as scaffolding, lightweight concrete and towel gulls, the exhibition’s set-up transforms Macro’s space into an urban landscape. A space to explore, following horizontal graphics, that direct the visitor through the various areas, just like a road. It is a temporary landscape, that brings fragments of the Street Art scene, the city, in the museum. The city is where most of the materials used will go back to, to continue their life at the intersection of other stories and roads. This is what makes “Cross the Streets” the most important productive exhibition design made by ma0.
