I ♥ Architecture

The Architekturzentrum Wien awarded the prizes to the winners of the fifth Az W Photo Award. The photos are being shown for a period of three weeks.

On the occasion of the current exhibition “In the End: Architecture. Journeys through Time 1959-2019“ (until 20.3.2017) the theme “I ♥ Architecture” inspired more entrants than ever before to produce interesting and very different views of their built environment. A total of 252 amateur and professional photographers sent us their favourite motifs.

Main Prize: John Fraser, untitled, April 2016, Birmingham, UK. © John Fraser

Among this wealth of images and moods a photo by John Fraser from the UK most appealed to the jury. The motif of the main prize-winner derives its strength from the contrast: we see part of a modern shopping centre. Within a historic context of Victorian architecture a reflective swoosh cuts its way into the Birmingham of today. The photo illustrates the transformation of an industrial town into a service industries city and opens up room for different interpretations. What do we see here? And, above all, where are we here? All entries that arrived in the Architekturzentrum Wien by 31 August 2016 were eligible to take part.

The jury was made up of Johannes Faber (Galerie Faber), Carl Aigner (Director of the Landesmuseum Niederösterreich and founding member of EIKON – Internationale Zeitschrift für Photographie und Medienkunst), as well as Martina Frühwirth and Alexandra Viehhauser from the Architekturzentrum Wien. As well as the main prize-winner’s photo the presentation in the Architekturzentrum Wien also shows nine further entries that were shortlisted.
