As the shapes absorb and respond to external force without partial deformation, a gentle bouncing or “boing boing” motion is created. Each structure is given different density of mesh due to structural necessity, resulting in different degrees of movement. In addition, the installation creates multiple visual layers, emphasising the translucent quality of the textile.
“I want to keep the beauty of textiles as original as possible. As architects, my team and I rarely deal with soft materials in daily practice”, explains Jo Nagasaka, founder of Schemata Architects. “We also want to take the challenge further by omitting the use of ‘hanging’ textile. After tremendous experimenting to create the optimal standing forms and the bouncing movement, we are satisfied with the final result.”
