At the D3 Contest exhibition during the latest edition of IMM Cologne, Taiwan-based Studio Kimu has presented The New Old Light, a versatile lamp with a paper and wooden shade that alternates between a soft glow and a direct spotlight.

"The idea of The New Old Light originated from the cross of the eastern and western worlds, geographically and culturally, just like in Taiwan," states Studio Kimu. "We are playing the role of an invisible line connecting both worlds, inheriting the beauty of Chinese tradition and embracing the innovation of western evolution."

The lampshade formally draws from traditional Chinese paper lanterns, but can be adjusted and costumised, allowing for diverse, varied shapes — and according to Studio Kimu, adapting to different occasions and needs. The New Old Light can be adjusted for different lighting effect by simply pulling down the paper shading, switching the lighting effect from direct spotlight to a soft light. "The New Old Light aims to combine culture difference into culture balance perfectly, creating more possibilities for your life style," states Studio Kimu.
