Design Miami, the pre-eminent international fair for
limited edition
design, has commissioned New York architects
Aranda\Lasch to re-
work the award-winning Temporary Structure designed to
house last
year’s edition. The project will involve the creation of a
dramatically
different façade, as well as a new interior lighting plan to
enhance the
volume of space. The interior of the structure will remain
essentially
unchanged.
“Last year’s design had great presence, yet captured an
ethereal and
delicate quality; it looked like it could drift off into space,”
Design
Miami’s Director, Ambra Medda, comments. “This year’s
treatment is
a striking contrast, with a solid and monumental quality
that could
trick you into thinking it was made of stone. It’s a modern
ziggurat;
Mesopotamia meets Miami, if you will. We’re even calling
it a
Temporary Monument.”
To develop the original Temporary Structure, Aranda\Lasch
worked
closely with manufacturer EventStar, the leading expert in
the field.
This year, armed with their newfound knowledge and
practical
experience, Aranda\Lasch were keen to innovate further.
“We wanted
to make the most of the relationships we’d developed,”
Benjamin
Aranda explains. “We decided to take a completely
different
approach, fully exploring the potential of the technology
and using
EventStar’s expertise as our starting point.”
This year’s design is distinguished by large horizontal
fabric bands
with a slight pitch, which are stacked and wrapped around
the entire
structure, giving an impression of weight and substance.
“The idea
behind the wraps came as a direct result of working with
the tent
fabricators and quite literally turning their construction
technique on
its side”, Aranda continues, describing a system involving
panels
which have been turned 90°. “This has not been done in
the tent
industry before, but there is no reason why it couldn’t be
applied in
the future,” he adds.
