In its five years of existence, Colony, the US design cooperative founded by Jean Lin, has impressed local and international buyers with its strongly formed community of independent furniture, lighting, textile and object designers from the United States. The co-op’s 14 designers have just revealed new work to coincide with NYCxDesign 2019 in a show titled “Pas de Deux, a Duet Between Design and Art”, on view until 31 May at Colony’s Canal Street store in New York City.

As each designer pairs their work with that of a different artist, the line is blurred between curator and designer. Involving the audience in its presentation, one of the design studios, Flat Vernacular, is exhibiting its Glasswing Wallpaper, while painting a complementary mural on a neighbouring wall, inviting the audience to participate and collaborate on the ever-evolving artwork that is titled “Flight Path”.
Studio Paolo Ferrari has used this opportunity to introduce two new chair concepts, with upholstery produced in collaboration with textile artist Hiroko Takeda. Each design was inspired by raincoats – both Western rain gear and mino, early Japanese rain gear made of straw. Another textile designer, Meg Callahan has launched her new Furrow and Mahler quilts. These are displayed together a video screening of a figurative dance duet choreographed by Ella Mahler.

In addition to the physical works, Colony has invited digital artists Dmitri Cherniak and Iain Nash and sound maestro Jasper Lin to create a multimedia kinetic sound installation in its loft space. Titled “Audio Topographies”, it’s a full-on immersion into spatial and experiential design. The entire show is nothing less than a feast for the senses.
