Fehlbaum is also something of an enlightened entrepreneur, he set up the Vitra foundation, has sponsored exhibitions and organised workshops, won awards and for the company campus, a few miles from Basel, has brought in some leading contemporary architects; Hadid, Grimshaw, Siza, Ando as well as Frank Gehry, architect of a design museum that draws 50,000 visitors each year.
The most recent recognition of his career comes from the trade fair held in Verona, “Abitare il Tempo”, that comparing him to illustrious predecessors such as Walter Rathenau and Adriano Olivetti, have decided to present him with an award, explaining that “In the contemporary world, Fehlbaum is a testimony of a manufacturing culture that promotes innovation and experimentation and bears witness to the plurality of languages and research that characterise this third phase of the industrial revoltuion”.
