To mark the tenth anniversary of the collection, Sir Conran has extended the invitation to Thomas Heatherwick, provocative architect, designer and sculptor from the UK whose recent projects include the renewal of the Material House at the Science Museum (from denim to concrete: 213 different materials that we use every day) and the highest sculpture in the whole of England, in Manchester.
His “shopping list”, like that of others before him – Newson, Morrison, Lovegrove and Droog Design – is a true reflection of his taste and inclinations. Heatherwick has chosen thousands of large and small inventions, non of which are very expensive but that have all been conceived with ingenuity. His selection brings together a range of totally different objects, from technicolour ketchup to a biodegradable cardboard coffin. Design is everywhere seems to be his message. And to see it, you only have to visit the exhibition that lines up his objects, on show at the Design Museum in London. E.S.
