Berlin: design blossoms in May

Design? Like fashion, art or architecture, in the right doses can be an effective element in the relauch of an entire city. Milan and Cologne, epicentres of creativity have always known it, the Belgian city of Kortrijk has upheld it for some time with its unique biennial and more recently Mediterranean cities such as Barcelona and Lisbon have caught on to the idea.

This year for the first time, Berlin will be making its debut. For fifteen days in May (from 3 to 18) – the entire city will form the backdrop for a packed programme of exhibitions, events, forums and parties under the heading “DesignMai”. The organisers are non-profit making association “Transform Berlin”, lead by Mateo Kries and whose founders include designers Werner Aisslinger, Oliver Vogt and Hermann Weizenegger.

At the centre of the fair is an extensive exhibition by the Vitra Design Museum (of which Kries is director) dedicated to young Berlin designers. The outline programme includes installations and work by Matali Crasset, Martí Guixé, David Design, Werner Aisslinger and Vogt + Weizenegger who have launched a competition to redesign the symbol of the city. Vogt + Weizenegger are also designers of the lounge in the new hotel Ku’Damm 101 which will be offering special prices to visitors to the festival.
